AIBO - Image 1The Wiimote's been hacked to do a lot of things - from measuring the acceleration of a car to DJing - but this may be the cutest hack yet. Colacheng83 hacked his Wiimote to be able to control an AIBO unit. He didn't stop there though: he compared the controls with your garden variety keypad input unit and the test was conclusive. The Wiimote "outperforms the Keypad in both speed and accuracy." Check out the full article for a video of the Wiimote-AIBO hack

Robot BJ from iXs - Image 1 It's hard to find a robots in the same league as Sony's well-loved AIBO (who's already in doggie heaven), but thanks to technology, there are some people kind enough to bring the doggie back home. Meet BJ, the dark version of the late AIBO, from iXs to be made available internationally this fall, with a hefty price tag of US$ 4,853.

Made for research and RoboCup competition purposes by iXs, this lovely black pooch's innards comprise of a Linux PS, ARM11 CPU, Kondo KRS-4013 robot servo, as well as 64MB RAM and 16MB ROM. BJ is also guided by a 350k pixel CMOS sensor, IR sensor, accelerometer, as well as what Google translated as "meat sphere sensors", which may spell trouble for male RoboCup referees.

Trouble or no, dogs will always be man's best friend, even if they run on batteries.

Nothing brings back memories from our past life than the sight and sound of a steam locomotive engine. How can you forget that melodious whistling? And that serpentine black plume of smoke which is now partly destroying our planet by spewing tons of greenhouses gases into the atmosphere? These days you won't see any locomotive trains outside themeparks and Western-type movies.

...unless the Crabfu Steam Robots become the retro-version of AIBO dogs. The Crabfu Steam Robots have nothing to do with crabs or dimsum. It is the joint creation of Matt Bauer, who created Rook's Pawn, and I-Wei Huang of Crabfu Steam Works. The Crabfu Steam Robot made its appearance at the RoboGames 2006 and romped off with two gold medals for "Best of Show" and "Kinetic Artbot". Check the video and see its hot performance at the Games.

The Carnegie Mellon University's Robot Hall of Fame will induct five robots which made their mark on and off the movie screen. The third batch of honorees include Maria, the a female robot from the silent film classic Metropolis (1927); Gort, another pre-Lucas Hollywood robot sent to Earth as ambassador of goodwill in The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951); and David, the android with Pinocchio syndrome in Steven Spielberg's Artificial Intelligence: AI (2001).

The real-life bots who made this year's cut include Sony's AIBO, the canine that requires no deworming, and the SCARA (Selective Compliance Assembly Robot Arm), an industrial robot that helped reduce the production cost of consumer electronic devices.

Established in 2003 by James H. Morris, dean of Carnegie Mellon West, the Robot Hall of Fame honors the contribution of robots to society. Inductees are chosen by an international panel of researchers, educators and enthusiasts based on technological milestones and for capturing the public imagination and inspiring roboticists to make dreams reality.

Hosting the June 21 ceremony is actor Anthony Daniels. If the name and face doesn't ring a bell, he played C-3P0 (inducted in 2004) in the "Star Wars" saga. Daniel H. Wilson, author of How to Survive a Robot Uprising (2005) will be the keynote speaker. The induction will be the finale at the the RoboBusiness Conference and Exposition, a two-day international business development event for mobile robotics and intelligent systems.
