Before, we reported on robots being developed to do housework. Well now, we have gathered pictures of various robots that border from helpful to bizarre. Here's a couple of them:
There's a robot waiter that "takes orders and gives performances" in a the first Robot Restaurant in Hongkong. Now if you think rickshaws violate certain human rights, you might be delighted to know that there's a robot developed by Wu Yulu, made to do this arduous task. Environmentalists would be happy too, as this robot was made from recycled materials such as ping pong balls (for its eyes) and sponges (for its mouth).

To make ends meet, Wu Yulu, a farmer from China, was forced to sell one of his sons. Losing one is painful enough, selling your own flesh and blood has gotta be more difficult. Actually, he didn't really sell a live human being, he sold one of his creations, you see, this farmer doesn't only grow crops, he also creates robots since 1980. He recently sold Wu LaoWu for 30,000 Yuan (U.S.$3,750) to make ends meet - his house got burned down in 1999 leaving them with nothing, and he also burnt his hand pretty bad since he can't read the English instructions on how to handle used batteries properly. Between the medical bills and the money for the new house - plus loans to fund further robot building - Wu found himself $11,000 in debt. Though his wife has been running a school out of their home and he's been hired by China Central Television to build customized robots, the debts were crushing. Now Wu has been forced to disband his robot army. From the beginning of his robot-making days, Wu Yulu has been rummaging through heaps and heaps of scrap just to be able to get suitable materials to make his robots. He made robots even if he dropped out of school when he was just 12 years old. Now, all that the poor farmer could do is reminisce the good old times with Wu LaoWu, by watching home movies of his son serving them tea and lighting cigarettes. But amidst all the hardships, the couple could still afford to laugh. As they struggle on, Wu Yulu's wife, Dong Shuyan mentioned that "when we got married, everyone warned me he would care more about his robots than about me...but on the other hand, at least he doesn't drink or chase other women." What a positive way to go through life. |
