Pretty soon, you won't need to bring your assorted electronics chargers to work because in the near future, the only charger we'll need could be found at your office desks. Office furniture maker Herman Miller Inc. has obtained a license from Fulton Innovation for a thingamajig called eCoupled - a system that eliminates the need for dedicated chargers because it could charge just about anything - Smartphones, mp3 players, PDA...You name it, it could give it life. How does this nifty contraption work? eCoupled transfers power through a magnetic field which means that the eCoupled device itself needs electricity. Herman Miller is embedding eCoupled in desktops and they are considering other uses for it. Aside from Herman Miller Inc., Visteon Corporation and Motorola Inc. are also working with this wonder device. eCoupled was recently showcased in the concluded CES 2007 held at Las Vegas. |

When it comes to videogaming, it would be safe to say that the recently concluded Consumer Electronics Show belonged to the triumvirate of Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo. Each one came up with awesome news and updates about their respective next-gen hardware. But while the rest of the world was focused on the three, Toshiba Corporation was silently stealing the show.Actually, the electronics manufacturer has been cooking this long before the CES. It would be remembered that back in December, there were talks about a Blu-Ray and HD DVD hybrid player that involved Toshiba. Also, the company has always maintained that they will defeat Sony in the Cell race. And then the moment of revelation. A few days ago in Las Vegas, Toshiba announced that developed a triple-layer HD DVD-ROM (read only) disc with a capacity of 51 gigabytes. The HD DVD format being supported by Microsoft holds 30GB of media while Sony's Blu-Ray has the capacity to store 50GB. Accordingly, this is how they've accomplished the feat:
HD DVD discs hold 15GB per layer. In order to reach a dual-layer Blu-Ray Disc-besting capacity, an extra 2GB per layer was squeezed in, for a total of 51GB. Improvement in disc mastering technology has achieved further minimization in the recording pit, allowing for the boost in capacity to 17GB in single layer and a full 51GB on a single-sided triple-layer disc. Lastly, Toshiba explained that the new disc has the same structure as that of a standard DVD and HD DVD, resulting to an almost negligible added cost of adding a third layer. They are aiming to get the approval of the new disc by the DVD Forum within this year. |

Here's a cool feature for what's to come in mobile tech. Microvision has recently announced the release of their miniature digital projector - that little device on the right. The projector, according to Microvision, is designed to be embedded in future generation cell phones and PDAs, allowing users to beam images of their videos onto a nearby flat screen - like a wall. And to give you guys an idea of the unit's size, that rectangular object beside it is actually a mint chocolate piece. Since the thing is still a prototype, don't expect to find it in your shops anytime soon. However, for the guys who want a closer look, Microvision will be unveiling this gadget on this week's CES event in Las Vegas. Given the other previous announcements regarding the CES, we're expecting it to be something a tech fan's Nirvana for the next few days. Still, it would have been cool to see this thing mounted on a PSP or DS, and the possibilities it could mean for modding. Just think - Projector + GPS Pack = Shion's palm pilot from Xenosaga. |
