Verizon FiOS - Image 1After offering the FiOS TV video-on-demand service (aside from its affordable internet service) since 2005 to its loyal subscribers, Verizon is announcing their plans to further expand their channel library by increasing their HD channel count (up to 150 channels, including sports and multicultural programming), as well as increasing the available number of HD content in the FiOS VOD.

Verizon also intends to beef up the value of their service next year, by enhancing the Home Media DVR function with new features such as being able to record HD programming, and being able to watch them from any HDTV connected to the Verizon FiOS HD box...as long as the TV is under the same roof as the DVR, of course.

Microsoft Ultimate TV - Image 1Intellivision's Bruce Adams, Paul Hoffman, and John Daniels, inventors of Microsoft's Ultimate TV system, are suing Microsoft for allegedly "misleading" them during negotiations involving the purchase of their interactive television patents. The three said Microsoft assured them that it "only wanted the patents for defensive purposes only, and that they will not use the patents and launch a DVR system".

Intellivision then gave the license to Microsoft in 2001, but "one week after the agreement, Microsoft launched an advertising campaign for its Ultimate TV product," according to the lawsuit that the inventors filed against the software giant. They are asking that the original agreement, which notably does not include royalty payments, be nullified and that Microsoft pay damages.

Microsoft has not given a formal response to the lawsuit as of this moment.

During last week's CES, we picked up on news of Microsoft's IPTV for the Xbox 360. Chris Satchell had made several statements on this upcoming tech, and detailed how it would be applied to the Xbox 360.

Now, for the rest of us still wondering what IPTV does when it gets plugged into our console, we've got news. The Microsoft TV site has just opened up a section on their site dealing with IPTV, and provides an explanation of what it does:

Microsoft TV IPTV Edition is an integrated and comprehensive software platform developed specifically to deliver broadcast-quality video and new, integrated TV services over broadband networks. The platform combines market-leading features such as instant channel change (ICC) and multiple picture-in-picture (PIP) with traditional TV services such as broadcast programming, VOD, and DVR. The software is developed to integrate seamlessly and economically with other IP-based communications and media services for PCs, phones, and other consumer devices. Microsoft TV IPTV Edition is ideal for telecommunications carriers and for cable operators looking to deliver differentiated TV services and experiences.

The site also makes detailed explanations of other features like Video-on-Demand and the previously announced digital video recording feature making it to the 360 package. Given that the tech isn't slated to hit the 360 until later this year, this provides a good opportunity to catch up on the features we may want to use once it's released. Full details on the read link.

The S3

We've posted rumors before, but nothing beats hands-on confirmation. The TiVo Series 3 is coming out and we've got bad news for you. It isn't cheap. It'll cost you around $799 plus service. The good news is that it seems to be worth every single cent.

One the design side, it's one of the better looking DVRs out there, and more importantly it still has a very intuitive interface. Old staples like the wishlists, suggestions, and season passes are still there. The playing list now includes a dedicated HD folder, storing about around 30 hours of HD programing (or up to 300 hours of SD). You can record up to two incoming signals simultaneously, while watching a third signal of recorded content to boot - heaven for couch potatoes who actually leave the couch to go to work. The S3 also support OTA broadcasts (ATSC and NTSC) in addition to analog cable.

The nice people at Engadget managed to get their hands on one and we're posting the pics here for you guys to look at.

As for service, the fees remain at $12.95 a month, or $6.95/month for those who opted for a non-bundled pricing unit subscription. If there are any problems with the TiVo it's probably the difficulty involved when you want to install CableCARDs. If it matters any for you, or you're the type that's wants assurance, the S3 is THX-certified.

See the Engadget pics of the TiVo Series 3 after the jump!
