In an effort to combine the spirit of the Christmas season with that of
concern for the environment, Tishman Speyer Properties, manager and
co-owner of the Rockefeller Center in New York, has decided to go for a
"greener" Christmas tree this year with the use of energy-saving light-emitting diodes (LEDs). Aside from that, Tishman Speyer has an alternative source of electricity for the Rockefeller Center complex.Find out what it is after the jump! |

Good news for cyclists and joggers everywhere: a new kind of yarn has been developed that, when weaved into clothing, will make the cloth glow and make you visible even in the pitch black of midnight. Motorists would go "oh my god, there's a Christmas tree on the road" and slow down so they don't run over you.The yarn was developed in the University of Manchester, and all it needs is a battery to make the yarn light up like the sky on the Fourth of July. It's made of two layers of yarn. The inner layer of yarn, called electroluminescent yarn (EL yarn for those of us who can't be bothered with such a long name) is dipped in light-emitting ink that lights up when electricity runs through it. The outer layer of yarn is regular yarn (yarn for short). The two are separated by a transparent insulator with holes where the inner and outer layer of yarn can touch. Once electricity flows through the ink of the EL yarn, the whole thing lights up. The yarn is currently less flexible than standard yarn but more flexible than optical fibres which do the same thing so its better for weaving it into clothes. So it's not the Halo armor, but at least you don't have to worry about getting run over in the dark anymore. |

Microsoft has announced that it will be releasing a new HD-DVD drive for its Xbox 360 home video game console. This follows earlier reports that the company will be taking 20 Euros off the price of the console's current HD-DVD drive. The announcement was made during Microsoft's 25th hardware anniversary in London. The updated HD-DVD drive's advanced interactive features were demonstrated by Mark Bennett, Microsoft's European business development director for HD DVD. "The interactive features actually work on HD DVD whereas Blu-ray titles are six to nine months away from getting features that actually work," said Bennett. Bennett also noted that Microsoft has more plans to incorporate HD-DVD into PCs in the future. The same event also saw Microsoft's announcement that it will start offering HD movie rentals through its Xbox Live service in the UK before Christmas. |

What it did not teach me was just how dangerous some of these designs can be when applied (im)properly. A recently published book, Forbidden Lego, by Ulrik Pilegaard and Mike Dooley from No Starch Press shows some of the more potentially dangerous designs a person can create out of a set of Lego blocks. No, it really isn't a book which promotes creative terrorism, rather it shows a behind-the-scenes look at Lego and the cool things a person can make if nobody had to worry about product liability suits. The book features step-by-step instructions how these designs can be implemented. The depth of technical information is sure to attract adults as well as teach kids on the physical principles attached to the Lego series. However, this is not a book for beginners and should really be used responsibly, especially if you want to create a pistol-shaped Lego gun that fires bricks (seriously, it's in the book). Regardless, Lego will always be something that promotes creativity in minds, both young and old alike. I may end up buying myself a copy of this book as well - for educational purposes, of course. |
