Pheer the iPhoneWhat we like about N'gai Croal is how he's able to pull off asking some of the tough questions that would get other games and tech reporters shot (by French ninjas, no less). He let us know of a funny new post to his tech blog where he discusses, in an iTunes playlist style, who should be watching out for themselves in a future filled with Apple's iPhone. Some of them you might know because you own these pieces of tech now: the PSP and DS.

On the PSP side, which is at number seven, he notes how the development of the iPhone could eat into the mobile media industry that Sony's trying to get a handle on. He writes,

After all, the iPod has iTunes (with music, movies, TV and games); while the PSP has the PlayStation Network (for PS2 games that can run on the PSP's emulator and...nothing else right now - more than two years after its launch.)

Suffice it to say that with the advent of even more tech that's touch-screen enabled, Sony really ought to think about following suit, possibly integrating it with their now-famous XMB interface.

Nintendo's dual-screen handheld doesn't really have a lot to fear from the iPhone, at least when it comes to getting sold. The problem will lie in sustaining the interests of casual owners. Croal asks: "How long will it take publishers to bring knockoffs to the touch-enabled iPhone, along with other games that take advantage of the iPhone's audio, video and communications capabilities?"

While we could talk about how Apple should be afraid of its own iPhone announcement (it's at number two, by the way), one of them will really hit us hard. That's the one in which Croal talks about us, as Time's People of the Year. Do we really want to spend a couple of hundred dollars for a phone/medium-range PC/ portable movie theater? Personally, if my iPhone doesn't make my coffee in the morning, I'll stick to my bulky, but lovable, Hello Kitty custom-case home computer, thank you very much.

 » yeah, but...

As awesome as the Apple phone (cant really call it iPhone yet since Cisco is now suing Apple) seems, at the same price points as the PS3, I dont think it will be a direct competitor. Plus, the iPhone wont be that great for serious games due to the lack of buttons (unless there are some hidden keys I dont know about). Still, the iPhone has potential

 » awesome

yep this is another gadget that gets my hands sweat. according to some sources the phone will have 2 versions. the cheaper version will be the $249 which has a 4 gig drive and the $449 version with 8 gigs. if those prices are right then you can imagine it will take the phone market by storm. regardless, its beauty its just old feature already available on some phones but mastered. iphone is basically a 8125 htc from what i would have expected to be 20 years in the future. well its here , its thin, its in and it does everything smart phones do prettier. too bad it does not support 3G. i intend to get one so i dont have to carry around my ipod and my brick 8125. i cant believe that microsoft did not do this earlier. time and time again mr. gates when asked what mp3 player he used, he responded, "i dont own a mp3 player because your phone should be able to provide music aswell". so your guess is as good as mine. will mr. gates be using a Iphone? after all its everything he wanted. as far as the psp goes great with one ipod less and a thinner phone ill be able to put my psp on my right pocket.

Sony's w950i has had this before Apple, touchscreen and 4gigs built in. Apple fails AGAIN.

 » 8125 - MDA

Well I have an MDA, don't know if it's the same as the 8125, and I'll tell you this, I would not switch mortplayer on my MDA for an ipod EVER. So I don't understand why your talking as if you can't listen to mp3s on PPC or any other media phone on the market. Personally this is the same as the ipod to me, they are just trying to re-invent the wheel and tell people "hey it's apple so it's cool" to sell them.

   Re: indy (Unregistered) - 2007-01-10
 » youre rite

i just read 500 bucks, my gosh. thats alot of money. one thing i over looked was the fact that with my 8125 i dont have to convert anything.my biggest prob with my ipod is waiting 2hrs to convert a movie.

Yeah, cuz Apple has been on a very long losing streak.

"...there's a reason that we at The Revolution carry a phone, a PDA and a PSP."

Sounds like there are a bunch of PSP fans over there. Very cool.

 » NU!!

If they put a touch screen on ANYTHING of mine, killing sprees WILL ensue. I haven't touched my DS in 6 months, and this is EXACTLY why. Anything + Touch Screen = TEH SUX!!!

   Re: coolguy5678 - 2007-01-11
 » I agree

I actually agree with you there (not in a Anything + Touch Screen + "TEH SUX!!!" way though). I like to actually be able to feel the buttons I'm pressing. It's the same reason I hate the iPod's stupid touch-sensitive wheel thing which everyone else loves for some reason.

   Re: xche78x - 2007-01-11
» touch screen is not bad on other gadgets

you cannot say the same thing on the sony UX-90 flash black edition. i love the touch on the UX it makes pointing the mice faster specially on PCDJ.

   Re: Gryff33 - 2007-01-11
 » Really?

You're more than entitled to that opinion, guys, but don't expect the general public to agree. If sales of the DS, iPods, and Palm Pilots tell us anything, it's that touch screens are popular.

 » WTF

The PSP is doing fine in my opinion. Sony released it as a portable PLAYSTATION and it plays its games well. The rest of its multimedia capabilities are a bonus and it also handles them well (sorta). A PSP is a console and a iphone is a phone. SHEESH

by Some guy. (Unregistered) - 2007-01-11
 » Huh?

So I can toss my PSP now, because I will be able to play tetris on my iPhone? I mean, the word "game" must mean any game on the planet right? They are all the same. My new iPhone plays games, and so does my PSP and DS, so they must all be redundant?

Come to think of it, when I was in junior high school, I had a watch that played PacMan. I should have just kept that. I would have never had to buy anything else.

Oh, and to this guy:

" Sony's w950i has had this before Apple, touchscreen and 4gigs built in. Apple fails AGAIN."

So, when you say "fails", you mean wildly successful right? Because it will be. Just like the iPod has been, and still is. Not just moderately successful, but wildly. I know what you must be thinking. YOU do not care for it, so therefore it must be a failure. The fact is, it does not work that way. The world simply does not revolve around you.

Their voicemail feature alone has me pretty excited. Nothing sucks more than dialing my voicemail and hearing the dreaded "You have 26 new messages, to check unheard messages, press 1". I know somewhere in there will be 17 messages from a colleague that is just a bit over anxious to talk to me, but alas, I have to listen to every message, one at a time, in the order they were received.

As far as I can see, the only thing they have going against them right now is their exclusivity with Cingular. That alone will keep this nice new toy out of my hands.

At any rate, back to my original point, the iPhone and the PSP have absolutely nothing to do with one another.

 » Stupid

I agree with previous commentors; no phone can beat the DS or PSP in terms of gaming. Also, Apple products tend to be unreliable (at least in my personal experience and from what I've heard from others), almost as unreliable as their tech support.

Maybe i just sh1t in my pant6s and it ran down my leg, the iPhone is not a "phone" its a multimedia device, and the sooner people realise apple are screwing them over, the better
