It has been around since 2005 and finally we're getting some updates on Philips' Readius. Based on Philips Polymer Vision's PV-QML5 rollable display reference design, it is the world's first rollable display.

The display is reflective and can be easily read in bright sunlight or dimly lit environments while being able to be seen at virtually any angle - just like paper. Now how did they make so, that it's flexible yet not flimsy, you ask. Polymer Vision's website describes the process as such.

The answer lies in organic/polymer TFTs. These can be made using low temperature processing techniques, so you can use plastic as a substrate for the TFT layer. Together, the base and the TFT layer are just 25 μm thick. On top of this base and TFT layer, you still need a display effect technology that’s also flexible enough to roll – such as the electronic ink we’re using today. Combine these two elements in the right way and you have a rollable display that is tougher and lighter than anything based on glass.

At IFA 2005, mass production for this e-Reader was slated by Philips to be in the third quarter of 2006 while the first devices were expected to hit the shelves before Christmas 2006. Well, the aforementioned estimate isn't actually way off, okay maybe a year off if we take the words of Philips researcher Hans Driessen who says that we're going to be seeing Readius in stores early 2007. Clock's ticking.

Aytobe

As the product's website simply puts, "Its focus is to provide navigation for every body who need to get from A to B." Nothing fancy with this new PND SiRFStar III from Danish company Dangaard Telecom, except maybe the affordable price of €250 or $320 USD.
GPS is provided by Smart2Go backed up by the latest and most detailed maps provided by Tele Atlas and you can either view your way via 2D and/or 3D. Two versions will be hitting the shelves, one with a chart SD of 512MB containing the chart of your area, the second with a chart SD of 2GB containing the totality of the charts of Europe of the West.

Seems like Viggo Mortensen is not the only Danish delish anymore. See the Aytobe in action in the in the presentation video provided in its website.

Cork CatcherWho could forget that scene from Ben Stiller's movie Meet the Parents, where he popped a champagne bottle and sent a deadly stray cork flying, knocking down the urn that holds Grandma's ashes? It maybe funny in the movie, but you wouldn't want to be caught in that situation in real life.

Maybe that's the sort of scenario that Screwpull wants you to avoid when they invented Cork Catcher. The way it works is you simply put it on the bottle after removing the foil and cage, hold it firmly in place and give your favorite bottle of sparkly a good twist. What soon follows is a familiar "pop" signaling you to let the wine flow.

It is available over at Screwpull's website for £20 or roughly $37.90 USD.

Hoboken

In a city teeming with automobiles, the Hoboken garage is a welcome sight to car owners. All you have to do is follow a set of computerized directions, place the vehicle onto a "wonkavator" and watch as your car is whisked upwards and slide into a parking bay. It can fit 324 cars in a 100 x 100 foot lot. Simple as pie.

However, getting your vehicle out of the garage is an entirely different matter. It's not because of any malfunction, but an ongoing contract dispute between the city of Hoboken, New Jersey and Robotic Parking">Robotic Parking. The garage is city property, while the software is Robotic Parking's. Clearly, when the city decided to end the contract with Robotic, it didn't actually realize that they might as well have put up a closed sign on the garage, since the software that makes everything work is Robotic Parking's property.

Now, the garage's customers are the ones suffering for this mental lapse. Their cars are trapped inside the the fully automated parking structure until the issue has been settled. Fortunately, both parties have agreed on a settlement - the city paying $5,500 a month for a three-year software license while Robotic would continue to provide technical support.

Drive Alert Master

SmartHome's Drive Alert Master could be an alternative to listening to the radio or talking to someone with you on the car just to keep awake. The device is designed to jolt you back into your senses every time you're about to fall asleep. Shaped like earphones, it fits like a glove in your ears. The soft, padded design makes it comfortable to wear even for long periods of time.

What it does is emit a powerful beep to awaken you once it senses that your head is tilted 15 to 30 degrees. It will only stop once your head is upright again. It's priced quite cheaply at $14.99, just keep in mind though that this is not the solution to avoid accidents from drowsy driving; it's just an aid in keeping you awake. If you feel that you're getting sleepy while driving, the best, not to mention cheapest, remedy still is to just pull over and take some rest.

It could just be every boy's dream. Okay maybe when they were 8, boys dream of something else when they hit puberty. Anyway, this robotic suit, designed by Masaaki Nagumo, stands at a towering 10 feet and weighs a staggering 1 ton. A human will be able to direct the robot from inside the cockpit, using four pedals. It can walk forwards, backwards or sideways at 1.5 kph.

And you thought that was cool? We're only getting warmed up. The robot is equipped with two air guns that shoot sponge bullets. It will be very interesting to see how Xzibit will pimp this ride. Decals? 15-inch monitors? A bathtub?

Nagumo, spent two years developing the product. He said he wanted to see a robot, which people can ride and operate, like Gundam, referring to the popular anime series. The Land Walker, which is made to order, costs 36 million yen ($315,000). The price will be lowered if enough people place orders, he said.
