*UPDATE: We have added a followup article with a lot more info, a video, and some user Q&A.

When friend of QJ.NET "Crazy Jon" called us up and told us about a project he was working on, we didn't believe it at first. But when we got to his house, sure enough -- twelve 30-inch Dell flatscreen monitors are sitting in his office, and he's grinning from ear to ear. Also among the pile of goodies are six NVidia GeForce 7900 GTX 512mb video cards, and three Turbo-Cool 1KW 1000-watt power supplies. Soon the QJ.NET crew was busy unboxing and tackling the project of mounting these bad boys.

Blank wall. Boring huh? Let's spruce it up.

Step one: First, we installed three 1X6 boards which are anchored to the studs in the wall. This is helping to support the weight of the monitors and the mounts.

Step Two: There was concern that the monitors would create too much heat, so we mounted 48 quiet running fans.

Step 3: Mount the monitors! Only 11 out of the 12 monitors showed up, one got lost in shipping. But we went ahead and pulled all wires for the fans, power for monitors, and EXT-DVI-141DLB DVI DL booster cables for video extension.

Step four:
Matrix screensaver. It was a must! Still waiting on the last monitor to arrive.

Ahh, there we go. The 12th monitor has arrived and been mounted. After a week of work, the Wall-O-Monitors is finally complete. We've loaded up live traffic and security feeds, a web browser, World of Warcraft, and of course, Fish tank screensaver. Looks nice! 3000 watts of power seems to be powering the wall just fine. The fans are working well and dispersing heat very well. There were some concerns that the power cable extenders wouldn't do the trick, but it has been very stable. You can click on any of the thumbnailed images to view the full resolution version.

Oh, and did we forget to mention the five 30-inch apple monitors that are on Crazy Jon's desk? Here's a peak at the desktop setup. And a shot looking over the desk. Unbelievable. How much desktop real estate do you really need man!

And finally, a before and after shot. Simply amazing. Give me Quake 3 on all twelve of those bad boys and I'd never leave. It was really fun to be part of this project. Thanks Crazy Jon!

» You must have a lot of money

6 7900GTX 512Mb cards (so I'm guessing 3 computers in SLi), 12 monitors, power supplys and fans... how much did all of that cost!? It looks fricken sweet though, especially the fish screensaver streched over 4 monitors, shame you can't do it on all 12 (or could you?).

"children die of starvation, families make do in tents in the greater new orleans area, an indian boy drinks from a stream fed by a sewer, and this f**k paves a road with new LCD screens."

Tonnes of money goes into Africa/India/[insert country here] and do we see any improvements to their lifestyle? Since I'm still seeing the "give money" ads on TV, I'm guessing not. Plus it's his money, he can do whatever he wants. Although this project is pointless, it's cool none-the-less.

"When friend of QJ.NET "Crazy Jon" called us up and told us about a project he was working on, we didn't believe it at first. But when we got to his house, sure enough -- twelve 30-inch Dell flatscreen monitors are sitting in his office"

So first he Had 12 monitors right?

"Mount the monitors! Only 11 out of the 12 monitors showed up, one got lost in shipping."

Then He had 11

"Ahh, there we go. The 12th monitor has arrived and been mounted"

Now the 12th Arrived...WTF?!

 » Xinerama

You could link all twelve screens together. Linux & X.org using Xinerama extension (if I remember correctly) would be able to link the computers and screens together as one screen.

That would be even sweeter. Imagine running WoW, matrix screensaver or whatever at 7680x6400.

WOA IMAGINE IT ON BF2!!!!!!

Lol that would be sweet! Just read in a Wiki something about that resolution. Pity theres quite a gap between them. Shouldof taken them apart and mounted them bare! hehehe

that's pretty lame and pointless, why waste so much money when you could cover that much space with a projector for a fraction of the price plus then you wouldn't have the gaps.

by Anonymous Coward (Unregistered) - 2006-04-13
 » This looks great!

how about some commentary of how it was all setup, and how does he run 5 mac monitors on his desk, is he running a mamoth pc with multiple V cards, or a power mac? combination?

Thanks

Not pointless -- with individual lcd, u can have them display different stuff or all one big stuff on all the screen. A projector you can't display 12 different things at once.. =). Come on buddy!! THINK!!!!!!!!!!!!

 » Apple doesn't make 32" LCD screens

just one minor correction -- Apple does not manufacture any 32" monitors. The article should be corrected to reflect that he had five 30" Apple monitors on his desk.

by Anonymous Coward (Unregistered) - 2006-04-13
 » I'm soooo damn jealous.

I was waiting and waiting for those 30" dell monitors to go on sale. I finally gave up and bought one of their 24" models. Now I see why they never put them on sale; this guy was buying all of them at full price (I guess). This also gave me a heads-up that Apple had 32" monitors. Now I have something else to drool over.
