Volvo's 2020 vision: The injury-proof car - Image 1The three-point seatbelt, crumple zones, side impact airbags, and rear-facing child seats were all leading innovations in car safety, and they are all from the Volvo Group.

However, these are old-school compared to what they have in store for car safety in the future.

Currently, the group already has car safety tech that offers extra precautions. For example, they have tech that won't allow ignition if the driver is hammered, and sensors that check whether the driver is alert enough to drive (it will sound an alarm if it finds that the driver is drifting).

They're not stopping there though. By 2020, they hope to manufacture even more intelligent cars designed for maximum safety. It won't be anywhere near as cool as Bumblebee, but we might see one in the future if we're lucky.

Anyway, the car that Volvo has planned has a significantly enhanced physical structure and tech. The car's "deformation zone" will be supplemented by radar, sonar, and a bunch of other equipment that will feed back data to the car. The tech will effectively make the car one huge bumper with wheels.

You know those times when a driver freezes on the wheel when he's about to crash? Kind of like a deer-in-the-headlight situation. Well, this smart-car will be able to steer or brake on its own in the event of a crash situation. The tech hopes to halve the rate of road-deaths. Now if only it can transform and roll out.
