Blu-Ray vs HD-DVD - Image 1And so the HD DVD-Blu-Ray battle ensues. Next to the console wars (which, thank god, has been dead for quite some time now), this is perhaps the hottest debate-inducing battle humanity has ever known. Yeah okay, I exaggerate. But you gotta admit there have been really heated discussions over which format is better.

Now we hate to fan the flame, but with this recent news about Toshiba's plans to launch a 51GB HD-DVD disc, eyebrows are once again being raised. Why? Well for those not in the know, Blu-ray has had the upper end on the format war in terms of storage capacity (50GB), being able to store up to 50GB of data...up until now that is.

According to a TGDaily report, Toshiba has successfully created a triple-layer HD-DVD disc that can hold up to 51 GB worth of data and has submitted their brainchild for regulatory approval. This is huge news for avid HD DVD users because HD DVDs were only previously available in 15 GB and 30 GB capacities.

HOWEVER, as to whether the creation of this third layer is feasible in terms of mass production still remains a big question. Not only would this mean higher production costs, it would also entail looonger periods for production. Consumers who refuse to give in to the format dichotomy opt to get the combo drive players, but sales haven't been skyrocketing due to high selling prices.

Media reports say that Toshiba is introduce this new format to the market before the year ends, so for now, all we can do is wait for more info to surface. Rest assured we'll keep you posted for further developments.

There not going to be released to public, due to high production cost. There was a triple layer DVD that was introduced but was never released to the public. Even if this is true Blu-Ray can just introduce their 100gb triple layer BR-Disk

you idiots it says 'Media reports say that Toshiba is introduce this new format to the market before the year ends' Toshiba have had this in devlopment for ages now, sure they can show it off just as triple layer DVD was shown off but it doesn't mean it is going public.

This is great news. 51gb disc on a preferable format.
You don't need a HDTV to appreciate a storage format.

Great news especially if it comes to the Xbox to, looks like MS knew all along it would be just a short time before HD-DVD would better Sonys now lower spec old 50gb Blu Ray.

WOW! HOW AMAZING!

...no not really, HD-DVD cant hold as much because the type of protection it uses on the disc. the HD-DVD is more similar to a DVD because both use the same type of protection layer on the bottom side of the disc. It is not that great when it comes to avoiding scratches but its thick enough to keep the disc running.
blu-ray however has a much thinner layer of protection but is much much stronger. (made by panasonic, and also none of my blu ray discs have been scratched yet. yay!)
so basically, the thicker the protection (i think HD-DVD is two to three more times as thick compared to blu ray), the less info the disc hold. you should know this already if you have glasses too. and the laser gets a bit more distorted when reading. so...
even though both blu ray and hd-dvd use the same diode, they extract info differently, and the way the disc is made is also different.

so what if Sony release a 100GB Blu-Ray disk - the PS3 wont b able 2 read any layers beyond 1+2 - correct me if i'm wrong.

HD-DVD players can read the higher capasity discs already, but Blu-Ray players need an upgrade if I remember correctly, just firmware upgrades, I do not think its a hard ware issue.

I read up to the point where PS3rider wrote that magic word -statistics- lol that was where I stopped, arnt you also trying to push Blu Ray with that post to?...

And for every site that says One format is winning there is another that says the other is winning is,so lets wait and see.

And f either format gives a FREE film (rember the word FREE)with their console or player they wouldnt add that to their film sales would they?....

   Re: PS3Rider (Unregistered) - 2007-03-02

No they would add it to their film sales, as it has been confimed by sony that the free films that have been given out with the PS3 have not been included in Blu-Ray sales

 » Can you see it?

The pain in the eyes of Blu-ray whores. If it werent for Blu-Ray the PS3 would have sold much better. i will not buy one. atleast with the 360 if i dont want to support a format i dont have to. DVD hasnt been the market leader that long and most people dont know what blu-ray or hd-dvd even are. But it seems that sony is advertising the hell out of blu-ray will the hd-dvd side has been relatively quiet on the advertising front.....sony looks kinda desperate to me. Only time will tell.

 » RE: qw

   Re: PS3Rider (Unregistered) - 2007-03-01
 » ...

HD-DVD has been quiet because it has lost many studios to Blu-Ray. Heres a few statistics for you: Blu-Ray movies are beating HD-DVD movie sales by a ratio of 4:1. Blu-ray players are beating HD-DVD players at a ratio of 3:1. The only good backing studio that HD-DVD has now that isn;t also backing Blu-Ray is Universal, which is ready to start producing their movies on both formats for the time being. Many Studios have gone to Blu-Ray due to its dual AACS security, whereas HD-DVD is much easier to copy due to its single AACS. The production costs of Blu-Ray are expected to plumet by 50% by 2008 due to cheaper manufacturing, whereas if HD-DVD was to compete with Blu-Ray by releasing their triple layer HD-DVD disks, their production costs would be more to produce a 50gb HD-DVD disk than a 50gb Blu-Ray disk.

Just recently from the mouth of Bill Gates, Microsoft believe Flash Nand memory is the future media storage, and that neither Blu-Ray or HD-DVD will win. I see that as a sign that Bill Gates doesn't believe that HD-DVD will beat Blu-Ray.

Some people believe that Sony shouldn't push a new format on to its comsumers, but without doing this, how will the format succeed? Take DVD for instance: DVD has become the most popular media format in the past years, but why? The answer is the PS2, as the PS2 incorparated DVD into it, and because of this sold a lot. At the moment many people don't have HDTV's but once the whole HD broadcasts and switch over happens in the next 2 years, I can see the PS3 selling a lot due to its cheap Blu-Ray cababillities, whereas HD-DVD won't have the backing support it needs, as it is not incorporated into the Xbox 360. A format always needs to be pushed otherwise nobody will buy it, and that is fact.

At the moment all statistics over the internet and in blogs point to one clear winner: Blu-Ray. Sure it may not be an easier format war, but at the moment Blu-Ray has the biggest backing support of many studios.

PS3Rider Statistics off the net fzzzzzzz websites in favour of One or the other fzzzzzzz, all rubbish, for every site their will be another with the opposite opinion.

And the winner for YEARS to come is called DVD and that is what is in the 360, Normal householders who are Non gamers or film buffs dont give a crap about Blu Ray or HD-DVD and this wont change untill normal TV get broadcast in HD only, as this is the only reason why householders will ever bother upgrading their Tv as in its present form normal TV looks worse on an HD-TV...

blu ray sucked cuz it costed more to produce and the space wasnt needed.

HD-DVD now owns becuase it now costs more to produce and has more space.

does the extra space matter? on a ps3 forum it doesnt, but in a 360 forum it does. now that HD-DVD has an advantage in capacity.... space is a huge subject now? you guys are gay.

what happens it bluray adds a third layer?

Contrary to reports this week that Toshiba had completed work on its 51GB, 7 hour HD DVD disc and submitted it for approval to the DVD Forum, Toshiba says the disc is still in the works, and that it hasn't made any official announcements since early January when it first revealed the disc. "We're puzzled ourself by where these reports came from," said Junko Furuta of Toshiba, who denied such developments. That's all we know for now, no word on when the disc will actually be completed, but according to the original announcement, Toshiba will be looking for approval of such a disc this year.

Do any of you really believe that Blu Ray or Hd-Dvd are winning anything ? because I can tell you they are not, they are fighting over a tiny market as the real winner is called DVD it sells a huge amounts of hardware everyday and proberly sells and hires more films in a month than Blu Ray and Hd-Dvd together have done in a year.

cmon 3 layer 51 GB? Blu-Ray already announced a 200GB disk since august 2006.

» 200gb is pointless to normal households

200 gb is pointless who is going to risk storing info of that size on One disc? NO ONE.

The point about the HD-DVD 51gb is it if it comes to 360 it puts it at the same size as Blu Ray which in turn will cut out any bull about games wont fit on 360 on One disc etc..

Games arnt made on HD-DVD disk you idiot, there made on normal DVD disks. Also 51gb HD-DVD disk will cost more in production than dual layer 54gb Blu-Ray disks.
