Aside from DNA, fingerprints, and retinas, the body has countless other ways for people to verify their identities. One piece of technology scans the veins of your palm. It's simple, but very effective, and will soon be introduced in the US for any student who wants to attend business school. Guess you have to review for that exam after all, huh. Details in the full article. |

Cameras, much like everything in technology, is getting smaller and smaller. So small, in fact, that you might not be able to see them until it's too late. Such is the case with Digital Cowboy's latest little baby, the DVR-BP, a spy pen camcorder that not only records, but also writes. Check it out in the full article, to see just what you can use if your last name is Bond and you have a awesome car in the garage. |

Some downloadable media are free, but that just means we don't pay for
it. Some of those media - videos in particular - are only free because they come with ads, and if no one watches those
ads, the system becomes ineffective. This reasoning might explain why Microsoft has filed for this patent: a system that "enforces advertisement playback for downloaded media." More in the full article. |

Good news for cyclists and joggers everywhere: a new kind of yarn has been developed that, when weaved into clothing, will make the cloth glow and make you visible even in the pitch black of midnight. Motorists would go "oh my god, there's a Christmas tree on the road" and slow down so they don't run over you.The yarn was developed in the University of Manchester, and all it needs is a battery to make the yarn light up like the sky on the Fourth of July. It's made of two layers of yarn. The inner layer of yarn, called electroluminescent yarn (EL yarn for those of us who can't be bothered with such a long name) is dipped in light-emitting ink that lights up when electricity runs through it. The outer layer of yarn is regular yarn (yarn for short). The two are separated by a transparent insulator with holes where the inner and outer layer of yarn can touch. Once electricity flows through the ink of the EL yarn, the whole thing lights up. The yarn is currently less flexible than standard yarn but more flexible than optical fibres which do the same thing so its better for weaving it into clothes. So it's not the Halo armor, but at least you don't have to worry about getting run over in the dark anymore. |

Big Brother

Talk about being watched by Big Brother. A school uniform maker in England is considering putting GPS trackers into uniforms so that parents can keep track of their children's location at all times. The idea was born from a survey which said that 44% of 800 parents were worried about their kids' safety. 59% were interested in outfitting uniforms with trackers. Personally I'd feel like a test subject tagged and then set loose in the wild, but nevertheless it's a practical answer to parents' concerns. As parents, it's their job to secure their child's safety. But what do the kids have to say about it? From the same survey, nearly half the kids aged 12 and below said they're willing to give it a shot, but teenagers weren't as amenable. The idea may just be taking the next step from new clothing line of Bladerunner - the school uniform makers - who also offers stab-proof apparel. A GPS tracker in uniforms isn't that big a leap from the idea of "Safety First." Hopefully it doesn't eventually extend to "Privacy Second." |

Sometimes a fierce glare just won't cut it, some people just don't know how to take no. Sometimes it helps to make sure they get the message, a message in the form of 50,000 volts of electricity.Last Monday, Taser International Inc. released the latest in their product line: the Taser C2, two numbers away from kaboom. Looking more like an electric razor than a stun gun, this dangerous doohickey comes in four very friendly colors, including pink. It fires two electrical wires measuring 15 feet, but of course it can also stun a person point blank. It packs enough wallop to go through two inches of clothing. The C2 is modeled after the law enforcement version, only carrying less wire, the non-consumer version having 35 feet . The battery is enough to go for 50 uses. While Taser's sniper-type stunner looks cooler, this would definitely give you less of that "are you crazy" look while you're walking down the street. |
