In an effort to combine the spirit of the Christmas season with that of  concern for the environment, Tishman Speyer Properties, manager and co-owner of the Rockefeller Center in New York, has decided to go for a "greener" Christmas tree this year with the use of energy-saving light-emitting diodes (LEDs)

Approximately thirty thousand of Tishman Speyer's new, multicolored LEDs will edge out the traditional incandescent light bulbs that have normally been used on the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree in years past.

With this new energy-efficient alternative, Tishman Speyer hopes to cut the Christmas tree's electricity consumption down from the normal 3,510 kilowatt hours per day  to 1,297 kilowatt hours per day.

On top of that, Tishman Speyer are readying their recently unveiled array of solar panels. The solar panels will provide the electricity for one of the roofs of the Rockefeller Center complex.
