HD DVD Paramount - Image 1In an interesting interview with UK site Pocket-lint, Sony's home video product manager Rachel Banin comments on why Paramount Pictures is still included in Sony's press release info sheet as one of the studios backing up the Blu-ray format despite Paramount's move to the HD-DVD Camp.

According to Banin, Sony is confident that Paramount Pictures will eventually switch back to Blu-ray if the format will steadily grow in terms of revenue. Blu-ray is currently enjoying the support of the majority of Hollywood studios, and Banin also cited the sales ratio of 4:1, in favor of Blu-ray.

"I think that if the progress of the Blu-ray format continues, Paramount will have to come back," Banin said.

This is just speculation.

Sure Paramount may come back to blu ray, but nothing has changed since the original contract was signed with the HD-DVD group. I believe the contract was for HD-DVD exclusivity for 18 months and 150 million.

It's funny Sony is acting like Paramount is still Blu ray though.

» With Warner going Bluray Exclusive who knows

With Warner about to drop HDDVD like a bad habit, we will probably see Universal go neutral and Paramount might come back too, if they can find a loophole in their contract

   Re: Constantinecy - 2007-12-13
 » Aren't they?

All studios will go blu-ray in about a year...and no I dont think toshiba and the rest left any loopholes to speak off! So paramount will have to suffer loses and low sales for the remaining of their contract ....Thats the nature if getting gready in the end you get panished...

 » Not 18 months

The '18 months' was a time frame made up by Blu-ray backers and Paramount have stated time and time again that they are HD-DVD exclusive and no time frame is involved.

I think Sony are keeping Paramount on their press release sheets to try and trick people into believing that Paramount still support Blu-ray, which seems to be what Blu-ray are all about. Spread lies to get people to buy into your format.

Don't try and trick people. HD-DVD is a waste. Smart people know that.

Atleast Blu-Ray is the superior format, unlike HD-DVD

 » Not gonna happen

Oracle, you need to keep up with the news. Warner have once again denied that they are dropping HD-DVD and have again stated that they are committed to staying format neutral.

It really must be annoying for Warner to have to make a statement every week denying rumours made up by the Blu-ray fans about their stance.

It seems the blu-boys think that if they keep spreading these rumours, Warner will eventually just cave in, but that's just not gonna happen.

   Re: Oracle - 2007-12-12
 » No they haven't

give me a recent link, all these articles about Warner going Bluray have been in the last few days. And in big publications like the NY times and Business Weekly.

 » My opinion

I think TheMallrat, whoever he (I'm assuming it is a he) is an HD-DVD backer (in which case - can I use brown-boy for you, Mallrat?) and he is just worried by any good news for Blu-ray. By the way, Oracle is right. Warner has so far not confirmed or denied these rumours, Mallrat. Here are the links if you are interested, and these are not years old, these have taken place in the last week:

Well i can see this happening if Blu-ray sky-rockets and paramount will have to switch if they want to continue making money. I won't be surprise if some other people jump ship if blu-ray open the flood gates of sales next year, which im thinking i going to happen but you never know. This is just speculation on my part.

   Re: Constantinecy - 2007-12-13
 » My prediction...

You are correct stealth..adding to your comment of opening the flood gates of sales, I think Sony will drop a nuke early in 2008 with a new line of blu-ray players at around $150$200 along wtih a furhter $100 cut in the ps3's price.

That will wil definatly and indefinatly headshot kill the HD-DVD. As regards the console wars....you now the rest!!Another ps2 like domination anyone?(not in that scale for sure but domination nonetheless!)

 » What can save HD-DVD?

The only thing that I can think of to keep this stupid format war going(that Sony started by the way) is if Microsoft puts an HD-DVD in a new xbox and this would have to happen within 2 years probably. Even if HD-DVD proves to be the losing format Microsoft still wouldn't put a blu-ray player in their next console because they would have to pay Sony for every system and game made that uses blu-ray technology. Anyone who says they know exactly how this format war is going to turn out is stupid.

 » To Oracle and Thinker

You two really do need to do some research.

Check http://www.current.com.au/2007/12/12/article/WEMPTGCOKS.html
and http://formatwarcentral.com/index.php/2007/12/11/warner-were-still-purple/

for the word from Warner that they are staying purple, and these also are not years old. They are denying the most recent rumours.

Go back to wishing on Blu-ray exclusivity as it aint gonna happen.

   Re: Stealth! - 2007-12-13
» lol good luck with your HDDVD then.

Im sure you won't be saying this and im sure Paramount will leave HD when the Blu-ray flood gates of sales happen. Its inevitable.

Those articles doesn't say anything like what your saying. Thinker is right here. They never denied or confirmed anything.

Re: goldfinger - 4 days ago
 » To TheMallrat

So the WB rumor isn't true????? They were trying to keep quite and cover there butts. Paramount will be back soon.
   by TheMallrat - 2007-12-13
 » Stealth

Did you even read the articles. It says right there in the first one 'Warner Home Video Australia has denied a BusinessWeek report that its US parent could decide to support only one format, likely Blu-ray, dependent on sales for each this quarter - a switch that could have tipped the balance in the HD format war.'

How can you say they never denied anything when it came right from Warner themselves.

Why do Blu-ray people believe stupid made-up rumours and then try to ignore the truth when it comes straight from the company who the rumour is about?

Are you guys that blind that you can't admit you're wrong?

   by TheMallrat - 2007-12-13
 » Oh and...

What do you mean by 'Im sure you won't be saying this and im sure Paramount will leave HD when the Blu-ray flood gates of sales happen.'

I thought that was supposed to have happened at the start of the year when blu-ray declared hd-dvd dead. Or later in the year when they said hd-dvd would be dead soon. HD-DVD have been closing the gap all year and the only way that Blu-ray have been able to stay ahead on software sales lately is by giving the disks away free. If you actually looked at disks sold for money and not the ones the studios lost cash on, then you'd see hd-dvd come out on top.

» Paramount never left Blu-Ray actually

This HDDVD deal is not exclusive. Only some of the movies will be released on HDDVD only. What does this mean? That Paramount still supports Blu-Ray therefore Sony can still leave their name on the list of supporters. Once the deal with Toshiba and Paramount is done (likely by next year), there is no way in hell Paramount will continue publishing HDDVD titles exclusively unless some large sums of money is exchanged.

   Re: TheMallrat - 2007-12-14
 » Umm...

Where exactly did you hear this.

The Paramount deal said they were to release only on HD-DVD, but the Spielberg titles weren't included. However, that does not mean that Paramount are going to release them on Blu-ray as well. They may hold off releasing them until one format dies off altogether.

Oh, and as for 'there is no way in hell Paramount will continue publishing HDDVD titles exclusively' - how do you know what the state of the format war will be next year. What if HD-DVD is outselling Blu-ray a lot by then, you really think there'd be no way in hell they'd stay exclusive. Unless you can predict the future you really shouldn't make statements like that.
