Panasonic Blu-ray - Image 1

If you're planning to make an opus that's as big as Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots in sheer file size, or just planning to save most of the contents of your hard drive into a single disc, then you'll need something with a big file storage capacity. There's no need to look further, now that Panasonic recently came up with a 6x write-once Blu-ray disc.

The disc comes in two flavors: 25GB single-layer and 50GB double-layer. They'll both be compatible with Blu-ray Disc Recordable Format version 1.3, and will be priced at around US$ 15 for the 25GB disc and US$ 37 for the bigger 50GB disc. The new Blu-ray discs will be released in Japan sometime in July, but there's no word when they will be launched in the US.

For those who are into the technical side of things, here's the full specifications of the disc:
  • Format Name: Blu-ray Disc Recordable Format Ver. 1.3
  • Model Number: LM-BR25MDE, LM-BR50MDE
  • Data Capacity: 25GB, 50GB
  • Layer Constitution: Single Sided/Single Layer, Single Sided/Dual Layer
  • Recording Format: Phase Change Recordable
  • Laser Wavelength: 405nm (Blue-violet Laser)
  • Objective Lens Numerical Aperture (NA): 0.85
  • Disc Diameter/Thickness: 120mm x 1.2mm
  • Track Pitch: 0.32 μm
  • Minimum Mark Length: 0.149μm
  • Data Transfer Speed: 216Mbps(Max.)
  • Hard Coating
