yes blu-ray does use a blue laser.... just a more powerful one will be required due to the grating system
Blu Ray uses a blue laser, hence the name...
AVA is your name Jake? If that is your name you said the exact same thing about Beta Max vs VHS X years ago. Look what happened :P.
If this becomes the standard driver for Next-Gen DVD readers, I think we could see a HD-DVD victory due to the price difference of the media.
I'll use the current gen DVD as an example. Early on there were three formats vying for a place as the standard for recordable DVD media. These were DVD-R(W), DVD+R(W), and DVD-RAM. With the main difference between the three being costs per disc (plus DVD-RAM's optional disk caddy). Eventually, multiformat burners became the norm. And the result? The most successful has been DVD-R(W), which is also the cheapest. Second was DVD+R(W) and last was DVD-RAM, which also happened to be the most expensive.
With HD-DVD's price advantage, and Blu-Ray's inclusion in the PS3, this could be anybody's game.
I actually saw both HD-DVDs and BR at the store the other day, and saw the price of over $30 and threw it down. What a waste of money. Freakin companies, they aren't worth that much more compared to a regular DVD. Pathetic.
This still doesn't end the war between two existing formats, just because you can play them both doesn't mean the companies supporting either format are going to sit idly by...
Right now if anybody has seen both the new hd-dvd and blue-ray high definition movies look really bad. I mean they look decent but because film producers are takeing the movie from the original film and converting it to high-deinfition you get tears and grain differences in part of the movie due to tears and dust on the origninal film.
i agree with number 10 because they will still be producing them on either blu or hd dvd
The HD difference is huge. Anyone who tells you otherwise is clueless or hasn't seen one in action.
HD dvd uses blue laser too
And no.10 and 12 are right. This wont end the war at all If machine can play both then film compaines will release films on their respective choosen format.
We need one format to win and a machine which plays both is the worst thing. Trust me on this. Unless every machine plays both ( which no way will happen ) then early adopters will still need to choose. A machine that plays both will just drag this rubbish war on and on.
When dvd first came out, there were other formats competing. But Hollywood said that they will only support one format so the rivals combined and we got dvd. Hollywood should of had the balls to do the same this time round too. Yet another case of sod the consumer.
Oh and a player that plays both and writes both!!! How much is that going to cost?
And to no 11. Yeah I was thinking that too. I wonder how many films released on hd dvd and br were actually filmed in hd? If they are just upscaled then theres no point in getting ither format yet. If they are upsacled then the chances are they will use the same chips that are in top line dnon and marantz players. ( not the lower end ones ). ou'd be suprised how much of hd content on u.s. cable etc is done by using these chips. Mind you they do cost more than hddvd and br players!
thank you #14 for pointing out that both blu-ray and hd-dvd both actually use a blu laser.
the memory on either hd-dvd or blu-ray would not be possible if it were not due to the use of two lasers.
and i don't think sony will actually want this hybrid player to come out seeing as how they have a lot riding on the ps3. i'm sure they'll fight against it as long as they can.
although the picture quality of some of the old films is low due to dust etc the 'resolution' of film is still higher than 'high def'... it may not be 'filmed in hd' but if it's filmed on regular film then it won't matter. the quality of the film used in movies is normally quite good, but the crap which accumulates on the lenses etc screws stuff up...
yeah, hybrid players will cost a shed load! i'm plugging for bluray, as i'm buying a ps3... simple really.
I'm getting a PS3, and I'm plugging for neither..I just see it as an expensive waste of money. I'm just not into film enough to spoil myself with the highest of resolutions. As long as DVD's supported, and I can make out the picture perfectly, I won't be making the move.
Now if Blu-Ray burners come down a few thousand dollars....that's another story.
