Xbox 360, PS3 Drove 28% of HDTV Purchases in Last Year - Image 1

In a war, the winners are usually the suppliers of the armaments. The console war is no different. Several of these "arms suppliers" for the consoles have already been known to benefit, like IBM Corp and GaN laser diode makers.

Another party also benefits from the console war: HDTV manufacturers. According to research from Frank N. Magid Associates, 28% of those who bought an HDTV last year did so because they wanted to take advantage of the hi-def capabilities of their consoles.

In case you were curious, 5.5 million households bought an HDTV for the first time for the 2007-2008 holiday period. 28% of that will be somewhere in the vicinity of 1.5 million. That's a lot of hi-def gamers out there. No data on how many of those are Xbox 360 gamers or PlayStation 3 gamers though.

With this data in mind, it won't be surprising if the next generation of consoles will have full support for HDTV straight off the bat. Sony, who won the format war with Blu-ray, will likely be happy with this news as they have a large stake on both the console and HDTV market.

 » Next generation?

"...it won't be surprising if the next generation of consoles will have full support for HDTV straight off the bat.." ...Yes. Like. the. PS3??? It was only Microsoft that decided not to equip their console with HDMI from the get-go, nor with an HD drive. Sony had the proper gauge on the emerging trend ... a gamble (I might ad) which they were getting soundly ragged-on for nearly 2 years. ("Oh, it's so expensive!" "Oh, they shouldn't have included Blu-ray!" "What were they thinking!")

Haha...it is totally inconceivable to me as to why MS hasn't included an HD drive in the 360. I think it is stupid on their part. Seriously, had they included HD-DVD support in the 360, the format war could've been different. I reckon HD-DVD would've even won the war if 360 has those drives built-in. Since by the time PS3 comes around, which is a full year after 360 launched, imagine the market penetration of the HD-DVD. There would've been a lot of HD-DVD adopters already, it'd take a lot to muster out sales to catch up to HD-DVDs with the PS3. However, MS didn't do this and missed their chance. But now there is a rumour saying MS is adopting blu-ray through the help of Lite-On...I think they are just trying to see which formart will win. MS basically isn't fully backing up HD-DVD...poor Toshiba.
