BEAR - Image 1The US military's cooking something up and it's something that can help save lives in the modern-day battlefield that's filled with hazards and obstacles that pose a threat not only to those injured, but to medics. Presenting the Battlefield Extraction Assist Robot, or BEAR.

Yes, we know it looks oddly cute with its face made to look like a teddy bear. It's supposed to be that way owing to the fact that its makers wanted the robot to have a friendly appearance to put the wounded and injured at ease.

But don't let its harmless countenance fool you, the highly-maneuverable, 6-foot tall robot can do pretty much everything that needs to be done when immediate evacuation's concerned.

A list of BEAR's features:

  • The cute teddy bear face: designed to look friendly and reassuring for the wounded.
  • Hydraulic upper body can carry up to 227 kilograms, or 500 pounds. That's a lot.
  • Superb balance due to a combination of gyroscopes and computer-controlled motors.
  • Ability to switch from tracked legs to wheels depending on the terrain.
  • Stairs. Other robots can do this, and BEAR can, too - even while carrying heavy loads in its arms.
  • Remotely controlled. No more risking others being injured to try and recover wounded soldiers.
With today's rapidly-developing technology often being put to dubious uses, it's good to see that people are also using it to try and find ways to help those injured in the battlefield. BEAR's certainly going to save a lot of lives if it does go into mass-production.
