Bandwidth speed, availbillity, cost and peneration isnt there just yet. But it's coming.
I know people like disc based media, but seriously...wouldn't you love if all your discs where stored on 1TB hard drive and accessible from a nice interface with your remote control? Any TV in you house can access it. All your favorite movies and tv shows a few clicks away, and purchase new ones with a few clicks.
I think MS still has a looooooooooong way to go interface, hardware and service wise, but getting into the game early is really going to help them do the track. Not a big fan of Apple but they are moving in the right direction too. Interesting to see how Sony deals with the possibility of killing it's own media with it's own video marketplace.
The future is bright, ultimately the custom will decide this one.
correction: customer will decide.
Just a final note, anyone with XBMC loaded on their Xbox 1 can appreciated where media centers are taking us. Hopefully we can get something as good with a nice marketplace sometime in the not to distant future.
YUP, the article is RIGHT. Just like MicroSoft will be out and Linux and OSX in. :-)
Sure sounds like it, since the movies you download can only be accessed for a short period of time before locking themselves up, which wont change anytime soon, because the movie studios are scared crapless of piracy. I doubt that Movies will ever reach the level of downloadable ease as music. It takes a hundred thousand dollars to make a Record, it takes 50 million dollars to make a movie, and those studios want to make sure EVERYONE is paying for it.
Speeds are definitely getting there.I download HD movies right now and it only takes me 1-hrs.I have 28mbps and comcast which only charges $99 for that every month including cable and internet.Comcast is also launching 160mbps this year and Verizon is launching a 100G service next year.
I like how just a few months back Microsoft backed HD DVD saying it's the best HD format, and now after this disc-based format war is over, they essentially call the thing they were supporting worthless. Effectively spitting in the faces of those consumers that opted to buy the HD DVD drive.
That's classy.
if you go to media store, there are still many dvd buyers.
do you expect a middle age person to get all the proper necessary equipment to truly access digital media? also, do you know how many people still have a hard time using dvds. Nope digital contents can not be mainstream for awhile.
M$ must see that as a big possibility and still says otherwise, why? because they want people to believe to that digital media are close future to start purchasing from them. If people really like digital content over physical disc, then why is it that tivo or other dvr arent as common as you might think. I mean, its easier to use compare to vcr recorder. Tivo are some of the first digital based media devices, but its result doesnt yield enough success to make me believe that M$ can pull it off. I know it's just business
DD will be mainstream within a few years it just won't be as big as ms claims BR & DD will co-exist.
drive capacity standard which is 8 years ago! 20, 60 or 120G is simply NOT enough. If someone is smart enough in MS they should realize that ~$200 a 120G is just stupid when my local favorite pc store is sell a 160G 2.5 SATA for < $100 canadian (oh sure it would probably == $150 USD in the summer if the Oil price keep rising and force the USD to go down even further). Mind you that it is the RETAIL price of 1 drive. If you are MS and buy it in bulk in wholesale price in taht volume it is much much cheaper no doubt.
I think your console is cheap enough. You HD are extremely expensive (so does ALL console memory unit except for Wii which can use a $10 2G SD card). But if you advertise that you can store movies in your HD then how many movies you can store in a 20G before you need to delete? Oh btw, not everyone has a dedicated OC10 with unlimited bandwidth.
Downloads won't really be big for at least 5 years, anybody who says they are downloading HD movies is misinformed. You are downloading medium def movies, true HD is 1080p you;re getting 720p tops. Also the hard drive convience is nice but as long as they have moving parts they will fail. It won't really be safe to store all of your movies an hard drives until they a flash memory only. Hard drives die all the time and people get pissed when they lose their itunes imagine how they will feel when they lose their HD movies. Microsoft is only making this statement because HD DVD lost, if it had won they would be singing it's praises. This is just sour grapes.
lol. maybe you dont get out much. or dont have a computer. why in the hell would you think it would take 5 years? thats about 1000 in electronic years. ive been downloading 1080p movies for along time now. there all over the net. also when was the last time you had a hd fail? its about 100 to 1 chance. ive had tons of hd only 1 has ever faild me. so what your also saying is bluray will fail. why? becuase it has moving parts to. why wont it be safe to store your movies? you can just download them again for free. and if people dont know how to back up there stuff. its there fault. they have no one to complain to. also with them losing i still think they were going with digital media as they have movie downloads forever now.
This is simply wishful thinking. Just because HD-DVD lost doesn't mean they can dismiss the existence of blu-ray in the near future. Blu-ray will become the next DVD most likely and will be here for a long time. Look at the general public, most of them still rent DVDs to enjoy movies on their weekends and what not, and most of those people don't even care to purchase a 1 TB HDD just to store their HD movies. And you tell me 1 TB HDD is mainstream? Just ridiculous, you know how much 1TB HDD is? It's not even in the affordable price range yet. Most people still buy 500GB HDD, and even that is not very cheap. Also, most people don't even have very fast internet connections, it's not Japan here, it's not Belgium in here. We don't have crazy connections. And waiting an hour just to download an HD movie when I can just drop by a video store and rent a blu-ray? I'd choose the latter. Rather than wasting electricity downloading an HD movie which I can just enjoy via blu-ray, I'd take the physical format. Also blu-ray contains more than just the movie, it contains commentaries, behind-the-scenes, featurettes and a lot more with the new Profile coming up. PS3 will take advantage of that and also other new blu-ray players. Physical format won't die for a while. Not until our internet are in the Gigabits/sec range and that has to be mainstream.
be here for a long time? doubtful. why do they still rent dvds? lets see. most of them either dont have a hdtv they have a upconverter or they dont know about high def. most people that download or rip hd movies go out and buy a 1tg hdd. some people hate going to rent a movie or dont have a movie store close to them. ya dont waste electri. waste $100's on gas! and also about the bts crap im sure they will add it in there.
Predator, your an idiot, shut up.
I for one prefer having a physical copy of any movie I buy, I would hate it if I bought a 20 something dollar movie and then find that my media storage was corrupted or with any other kind of error that would erase everything, plus not everyone in the world has a internet connection so this digital download over disc thing is far from taking over period.
What if you had a digital copy that you could own and access from anywhere in the world from a number of different devices (PC, Gaming and Mobile/Handheld)? Corrupt hard drive you say...download a fresh copy or better yet watch it while it's streaming directly to your new hard drive. Imagine with a few click puling up your whole library of movies and tv shows, each iconed, sorted by episode. Only a few click away you can see new content to buy. The latest movies with previews, the making off, cast lists, ratings etc. Sort by genre or search for a particular actor, see what movies they have coming up, past movies etc. See the top rated movies of all time or the most popular tv shows, and rate your own.
Are you too blind to see how a nice interface with web connectivity would make digital downloads the coolest thing out there?
True not everyone has internet, but less people have a Blu-Ray player and/or a HDTV either.
ya right I dont see the blu ray on the 360 at all. Its slow for Blu Ray movies and games ps3 is the only system that can handle it :D hahaha!

Will Blu-ray, the winner of the erstwhile format wars, last long enough in the market? Well, not for long, according to Xbox executive
