Sony at the Consumer Electronics Show 2008 - Image 1

It's that time of year again, boys and girls. The Consumer Electronics Show has kicked off and we again see the big boys showcasing their current and upcoming product lines. Sony's got a lot in store for consumers and it showed all that off at its press conference. This year, the consumer electronics giant chopped up its presentation and exhibit to three areas: HDNA, mobility and creativity. Since we don't want to miss some things, we'll talk about HDNA in this article.

Sony unveiled the first OLED-TV (Organic Light Emitting Diode television) which is about the thickness of three mm - or three stacked credit cards. If that's not impressive enough, the TV, model number XEL-1, boasts of a high contrast of one million to one. A 27-inch prototype of the said OLED-TV is displayed on Sony's booth, and it was reported that a limited number of XEL-1 units will be in select Sony Style stores starting tomorrow.

According to Stan Glasgow, Sony Electronics President and Chief Operating Officer:

Sony continues to reinforce its standing as number one in the consumer electronics industry. We are accomplishing this by offering products and technologies that show our innovation, as well as the ability to deliver the best customer experience.

Anyway, let's check out the announced HDNA products during the Sony press conference:
  • Three new modules that add features to Bravia TVs and will be available later this year
    • Bravia Wireless Link module - basically a wireless HDMI link for those who don't like wires cluttering the living room (supports four HDMI sources to a distance of 200 feet)
    • Bravia DVD Link module - gives your TV an upgrade for DVD, CD, and MP3 functionality
    • Bravia Input Link module - adds three more HDMI inputs
  • New content providers, CBS Interactive and others, were announced for the Bravia Internet Video Link module.
  • A new Bravia line which includes "seven entry-level 720p and 10 full HD 1080p models, including the company’s first 1080p 32-inch and 37-inch HDTVs."
  • Additional advances include Bravia Sync technology, Motionflow, and x.v.Color
  • A new high-def version of the living room PC, the VAIO TP Home Theater PC was unveiled. The said unit sports a Blu-ray drive, DVR functionality, and Bravia Sync (for one-touch play), plus two external CableCARD TV tuners which will allow users to record two programs at the same time.
  • A new internal BD-ROM drive (US$ 200), model number BDU-X10S, is bundled with CyberLink's PowerDVD Blu-ray Edition for Blu-ray playback.
