Blu-ray disc - Image 1Blu-ray is finally on its merry way to conquer the media world. Just a few days after analysts forecast a bright Blu-ray future - about 265 million households to convert to Blu-ray by 2012 - movie discs sales numbers came in, revealing the format's outstanding success over DVD.

Of course, Blu-ray's high turnout was also largely due to consumer confidence being granted to HD DVD's rival format after winning the recent format wars.

Chew on these figures: According to Nielsen's VideoScan First Alert, the Disney Blu-ray title No Country for Old Men managed to net 9.8 percent of its total unit within the first five days after its release. Fox' movie Hitman also proved to be a hit in Blu-ray, yielding 12.6 percent of its total sales to the winning format.

On the other hand, HD DVD sales clocked in at a paltry 2 to 3 percent of a title's disc sales even before the format was dropped. Now that HD DVD is almost out of the picture, we can almost be assured of a bright future, tinted in Blu.
