One disc... which will it be? - Image 1All good things are going for Sony's Blu-Ray and we know it. With Blockbuster's full support and the aggressive move to ship more players, it's no surprise that HD-DVD is lagging behind. Blu-Ray is maintaining a five to one edge over its format competitor, says the research firm Digital Entertainment Group.

DEG reports that 1.5 million Blu-Ray players have entered households. This is mostly thanks to PS3 sales, as only 100,00 of these are standalone. However, only 300,000 homes have HD-DVD players with the numbers evenly matched between stand alone drivers and 360 attachment drives.

Warner Bros. senior vice president Steve Nickerson believes that consumers are preparing to embrace the new high-def DVD category. That said, Warner Bros. still support both formats.

Nickerson foresees history repeating itself, saying this year "will mirror the year 1999 or 2000 for DVD.” It's too early to tell which format will emerge victorious, but Blu-Ray is enjoying a good lead. Out of US$ 55 million consumers spent on high-def DVD titles, US$ 35 million were on Blu-Ray titles.

No matter how it turns out, the home video industry is hoping for growth in sales. “It’s in the very, very early days of our forecasts, but we believe that High-Definition discs will help return consumer video spending to growth,” said Helen Davis Jayalath from Screen Digest.

yep i love blu-ray lol its awesome. I've watched casino royale and taledega nights and they were both awesome in both video and sound.

Im surprised no xbots have come yet and say something about the ps3 forcing the format...35$ mil spent on blu-ray movies 20m spent on hd-dvd. i think people with hd-dvd players buy more movies than people with blu-ray

» thats funny here in GTA HDDVD sells way more then blueray

Im not exactly sure i believe these results i work for a BestBuy Co. and run reports daily on traffic on 2 disricts... about 16 stores all togehter and ever since the price drop to 349.99 HDDVD player we have been consistently sold out and even preorders are locked down, this lack of cheaper units has sparked interest in the 599.99 and 999.99 skus as well. However blueray plans to market its first 599.99 (other then the ps3) next week so well see how it goes i guess.

ps. fathers day weekend we were sold out nearly everywhere of HDDVD and DVD of Planet earth, blueray was nearly untouched expect a few outliers, interesting fact. maybe just a lot of wives out to get a 349.99 (HD) player with a (HD) movie, perhaps all they hear about there new setup at home is how HD is better blah blah blah, therefore they got something they think is good. it happened enough times at our store in oakville.

GTA stands for Greater Toronto Area, and as far we being insignificant in sales best buy holds 17% market share along with around 23% future shop to combine to 40% of Ontario's game sales... were even more on overall sales... and the population of Ontario's is a good sample size to use; when considering Canada's population... all I am saying is when people come in to get the new HD experience with there HD sets most are opting for the 350.00 alternative and are not looking for an excuse to "get another gaming console" in the house sorry for telling it how it is? I guess fry's didn't really depend on Blueray taking off either as if what you are saying is true they must have had limited stock of planet earth. again just a suggestion however very logical and ...probable?

 » welll

if you read the article, people who want to just watch movies are going for HD DVD.

It kind of seems like they are saying they won because a PS3 comes with a blu ray player.

To make it more simple (as I'm sure some people are too stupid to understand that):

People who want to watch hd movies go HD DVD. Think about it, they wouldn't buy it on 360 if they didnt, and they sell more stand alone players than blu ray. Sony is just doing what they had planned from the beginning by using the PS3 to bring in blu ray. Big surprise (/sarcasm). It's good blu rays winning for sony though I guess, but it really doesn't have any affect on me.

Oh and to the guy spending $20-$30 a movie just to have them sit and collect dust, you're an idiot.

   Re: Quixand - 2007-06-21
 » myself alone

i know 7 close friends who bought a PS3 instead of a stand alone Blu Ray player because it's a better deal... so ur argument about stand alone HDDVD vs stand alone Blu Ray doesn't hold water cause some people looking for a Blu Ray player just opted for the PS3 deal which is part of the plan actually by Sony moron... and as of now it is the cheapest Blu Ray player too... so why get a stand lone, ur stupidity is stellar.

as for my movies just sitting still yet untouched??? i can afford it... i've got an entertainment room with two walk in cabinets for dvds, games (from ps2 to ps3), and now blu rays... i've got all my movies catalogued on my pc for fast searching, i got more movies than ur entire neighborhood ass hole... i've got three PS3 (one in there, one in my room, and one in my car in which i've got some untouched Blu Ray movies in as well ready to be watched when i feel like it)...

now no matter what ur opinions are HDDVD is losing... u can't twist the facts...

good things may come on your bday my friend and hopefully it's before March 08 when MGS is scheduled to rock ur world.

" if you read the article, people who want to just watch movies are going for HD DVD."

nice conclusion, but don't you think the people who just want to watch movies go for the PS3 because it delivers a lot more than just a movieplayer ?

If i liked watching movies, I'd got for bluray, because i could do lots of things with my BRplayer

   Re: Datnizzle - 2007-06-22
 » not smart

Stand alone hd-dvd players have a 50,000 unit lead over blu-ray. When hd-dvd players were $500-$600
you would have to be really stupid not to buy a ps3. From the start HD-dvd was an underdog, with disney and sony pictures backing blu-ray HD-dvd never had a chance. The HD-dvd camp knew that thy may be able to make a few bucks to get back some of the money spent on R+D. They knew they could rely on retailers greed and people ignorance of the business end of the "format war".

This isnt suprising since Warner Brothers which used to be an HD-DVD exclusive company now supports Blu-Ray. Blu-Ray has every company supporting them, especialy in the computer industry for backup BD+R/RW. With bith movie companies like Disney,Buena Vista ,Lions Gate, and Sony Pictures, does HD-DVD even see a chance of winning ? The only company keeping its titles exclusive to HD-DVD is Universal Pictures, but its only a matter of time :)
