The Prestige - Image 1As we all know Paramount and Dreamworks has decided to jump (exclusively) into the HD-DVD wagon, and it looks like it's not an isolated case. There's a noticeable outcropping of HD-DVD releases of movies supposed to be exclusive to Blu-ray, and some of them are even from Sony Pictures.

Among many other titles, Underworld: Evolution as well as XXX from Sony Pictures have been spotted under the HD-DVD banner. As for movies from other Blu-ray exclusive studios, Disney's Reign of Fire and The Prestige was also found with the HD-DVD logo printed over their titles.

The strangest thing? There seems to be HD-DVD movies from almost every Blu-ray exclusive studios.

Why is it so? Audioholics supposes that the high cost of producing Blu-ray discs is causing the studios to jump into the HD-DVD wagon from time to time. The fact that HD-DVD is region-free may also be another reason as well.

Is this any indication of a huge development in the format wars? Do check this space often to find out.

I seriously doubt anything from Sony Pictures is out on HD-DVD...

Chances are its just pirated Divx movies burned on HD-DVD.. but not even HD

Oh No quixand what will you do? Better go sell your taco stand i mean subway so you can buy a xbox 360 before your ps3 is really worthless.

How is telling him he owns subway an insult? And WTF does that have to do with a taco stand.

Lay off the bud, bud.

 » haha!!! Heath!!!

tell you what man.. if ever you are in Australia for a vacation you get your subs for free from me if you'd like to... i'll give you my cell number over the forums when the time comes...

as for the Blu Ray-HDDVD comment... if EVER by any chance, with the most remote possiblity that HDDVD wins this... will all my current Blu Ray movies suddenly stop working on my PS3???? will my PS3 suddenly stop playing and upscaling my DVD collections??? will it out of the blue quit reading my Blu Ray Games??? will all my Blu Ray disk evaporate into nothingness when this happens???

newsflash hotshot... my collection stays... and one more thing Blu Ray is far from losing against HDDVD... so "Oh No Quixand what will you do?"... i guess buy more movies for my collection.

Clearly you forget you're dealing with Quixand, not MCS. Quixand knows what he's talking about, actually enjoys his console, doesn't care what you think, and isn't a troll. Just go back to saying we don't have any games. That one made be laugh everytime a new game came out and you still said it.

How many games does it take, anyway?

I dont understand? how can a movie owned by Sony be on HD DVD? Unless they want it on HD DVD which is bull will it be on that? and Exclusive Blu Ray movies be on HD DVD? this makes no sense

 » well

Sony doesn't own 100% of the rights to some of it's movies, so in markets outside of the USA, the movies can be released on HD-DVD under a different distributor.

The distribution rights for movies are divided into territories. Sometimes the studio will retain the rights for those territories, but sometimes the sell them and the companies that buy those rights can put it out on any format they like, hence the Prestige on HD DVD (you can find it yourself on amazon.co.uk).

 » Perfectly right!

Spain and UK may see The Prestige in hd-dvd... On the other side, as far as I know, there's absolutely no other distribution channel for XXX... Maybe some isolated island somewhere in the world?

I hope it works both ways...

Ugh... what's the point of keeping HD-DVD arround anymore. Just let it die already so things can move along faster.

 » Ah..Ha

I think the reason, so called exclusive, bluray movie manufacturers are producing hd-dvd movies as well is to help end the format wars, by having both formats on the market at the same, time instead of wasting time and money on exclusive's only.

The real worry is that if this format war continues any longer neither formats will win and a different HiDef source will prevail in their place.

Probably HD steaming or some other form of mass media?

 » lol

But Peter "lying scumbag" Dille said HD-DVD would be dead within months!

This is halarious! Even Disney has movies on HD-DVD! They're all jumping ship! Looks like sony needs to lower prices and forget that massive profit margin they were after when they decided to start this format war.

At only $300, HD-DVD players are a steal. Looks like there's going to be even more movies available for them too as they begin to win back market share.

Try to find a Universal movie on blu ray! Or how about a new Paramount/Dreamworks release...

   Re: Barakku - 2007-09-11
 » What's that ratio?

9:2? 5:1? Blu-ray over HD DVD? Wow. HD's still kickin'. Kickin' like Betamax, except Beta was actually technologically superior; HD DVD isn't.

This is starting to annoy me..
Blu-ray should win this, has more space, and that is the only thing i could care about at the moment..

   Re: Goglu666 (Unregistered) - 2007-09-10
 » not

Beta should have won the ar as well... Since it was better than VHS.

But look at that, you get "Exclusive"on Blu-Ray could also import the HD-DVD since they are not region locked. So in fact you get some region locked blue-ray movies (so only some region will have them), and the whole world hd-dvd. As soon as a movie is released somwhere else in another format than blu-ray, you can say it ain't exclusive anymore, even if it's not sold in your region.

 » more space

You want blu-ray to win because it has more space? Is it really that important? It's like having a DVD-DL movie that only uses 5GB and the rest is filled stupid extra features. I have never bothered to look at the extra features on a DVD, but that's just me. Now if you want blu-ray for backup purposes, think of it this way, most programs that you backup to a CD or DVD are probably outdated within 6 months. Now you just wated your money on a Bluray disc that is gonna be kicked around. Try using a USB flash drive, they are getting cheap and larger in capacity, you can transfer files to them a whole lot faster, and later you can erase what you don't want, and re-use that space for new stuff.

 » Try $240

For the Toshiba A2 and under $200 come xmas for the venturer.

HD-DVD are cheaper to manufactor and are also easy to code for. Thats why movies like Blood Diamond/300 have IME/web features were as Blu-ray dont have anything that comes close.

The A2 is and has been one of the best sellers at amazon for a while now.

Although no real movie studios are jumping ship yet I bet its only an amount of time before we see blu-ray exclusive coming to HD-DVD.

Its all about profit people.

 » PS3 is dead too

I knew it! :) They realized HD-DVD is the superior quality. Of the 2 blu-rays I have, they're both showing grainy moving pixels while the HD-DVD versions are solid! Beat that, Sony fanboys. Your own mother company going to the true HD evolution form DVD -- called HD-DVD. No one knows what "blu-ray" means but everyone knows what HD-DVD stands for. Natural progression!

And we can all tell you are a little 10 year old Xbot. You don't even say which are the two blu-ray movies you supposedly own so just by that anybody can tell your lying. Only a true Xbot would call the PS3 dead. On the contrary the PS3 is just beginning. And this is exactly the reason why little kids like you should stay off the internet. You know what just go back to playing Xbox Live so you can resume screaming at other people *****.

How stupid are you people? Thats like sony releasing a game like killzone for the 360. They wouldnt release something that they own on an opposing format. I'd call these images photo-shopped. I could easilly whip one of these up in freakin PAINT in a matter of seconds...

» Blu ray is better than HD DVD

I own a PS3 & Xbox 360 and to be honest blu ray looks better! I have looked at them side by side in best Buy on similar hook ups and the Blu ray just looks better! Brighter, sharper and more detailed. I bought my Xbox 360 first so I almost bought the HD DVD player to go with it until I walked in to Best buy and saw them together, I also saw them at Circuit City the same way and I can honestly say Blu ray looked better. HD DVD has it's extra features in place first but all I really care about is picture quality and sound quality and that's where Blu ray has the edge.

   Re: TheONE (Unregistered) - 2007-09-10
 » BS

You almost bought it? In otherwords you didn't buy it, so your opinion is pointless, because you can't compare Blu-ray and HD-DVD in the way you described. The quality observed will be effected by the encoding of the movie, the TV it's connected to, the cables being used etc, so your observation is distorted.

BTW, from reviews I've read where they've compared the two together (using the same TVs, movies, cables etc), HD-DVD tends to come out on top for quality and features.

Sad, sad HD-DVD fanboys. This is a freaking ps3 news site!!! coming here and trying to say in any way that HD-DVD is winning is just hurting your format... You're just making the ps3 fanboys here want to buy more blu-ray movies...

The Prestige is a Warner title in Europe. There is no conspiracy. Some films have different studios owning the distribution in different terratories. There is no news.

 » Short Answer

They did it because they want to make money. The Prestige was good as hell, now everyone can watch it. Even people who made the mistake of buying an HD-DVD player can own this movie. Enjoy.
