Believe it or not, there really are ATMs (Automated Teller Machines) that run on Windows XP. It's just my opinion - and you can correct me or share your piece of mind on this one - but I don't think it's advisable to have an ATM run on Windows XP. Here's an undeniable fact: the Windows OS is prone to all sorts of virus, and we can't - and don't want - to have the ATMS we use to run on WinXP.

There was a certain bank before that made the same mistake of having its machines run on IBM OS2, and it had to rethink everything because of obvious reasons. One of QJ's staff members tells us there are ATM machines in China that run on Win95, and there are also some subway ticket machines running on Win2K.

How reliable these machines are and will be in the long run is not really a mystery to me, but hey, maybe I'm wrong. These systems the ATMs are running on might be more convenient for the banks, and also for the customers, as they must be more user-friendly. But then again...

ATMATM

» What... has QJ just gone fanboy. Your posters need more research

You cant be serious? first off ATMs you a completely different data network that this internet we are using now.

Windows based system that arent PCs will generally have just as much problems as any systems, and every system does have its shining examples.

This isnt even news.

While you are correct that these systems aren't connected to the net, the thing is these systems are linked through proximity, ie, connected to computers that are connected into the net.

I don't know if you've seen the research that one security company did into a bank's security (I've forgotten which one). This company laid a bunch of keydrives outside the premises of these banks for the bank workers to stroll past on their way to work. Around 9 out of 10 of these drives were then picked up and connected to internal bank computers (due to the curious nature of the workers), which then sent an email off to the security company stating that the banks security had been breached.

A willing hacker could use a similar exploit to gain access to the banks internal networks. With Windows installed on the ATMs (which are connected to the same network as they must access the same systems as the bank's terminals), it would be as easy as pie for said hacker to make the ATM spit out wads of cash on cue.

Sounds far fetched, but there really isn't much to it.

And Fanboy site? What's that meant to mean? Just because the article poster seems to think that Windows security is just a bit too inadequate for ATM usage, doesn't mean it's a fanboy site. 99 out of 100 people would agree with the author's opinions.
